Did your dad ever tell you what happens when you assume? Well mine did, and it was probably the first time I heard my dad use a "bad word"! If you look at the word closely, and follow along with me I hope you'll get it if you've never heard this before.
He said, "When you ASSUME, you make an "***" out of "U" and "ME"!
Funny, yes, but true. Clarity is a gift. Uncertainty is painful. Sometimes, we have to learn to live with uncertainty, and that is a lesson that can be hard to learn. Then other times, we could have had clarity and instead we held back from asking the questions we needed answers to and instead decided to ASSUME.
Did you ever get the message growing up that you asked too many questions? Sometimes adults get annoyed or frustrated and might snap and say, "Quit asking so many questions!" or "What's with all the questions?!" (That's a question in itself! Ha!)
I am here to say, ASK YOUR QUESTIONS.
That's right! Ask your questions! It's OKAY to ask QUESTIONS! It's how we learn. It's how we grow. Ask for what you need. Ask for clarity. Ask yourself what you really want. Ask the ones you love what you would like to know from them. ASK.
The saying goes, "It doesn't hurt to ask" ...but do we believe that? Do we live that way? It shouldn't hurt, right? So, how come it feels so hard to do sometimes?
I guess we are afraid of looking stupid. Or like we weren't listening. Or we aren't sure we really want to know the answer. We might be afraid of how the answer will change our plans! There are so many possible reasons why we don't just ask the question.
My challenge to you is to ASK IT ANYWAY. Ask the question you want the answer to.
Just remember, if the answer doesn't come right away, or it's not the answer you were hoping for, be patient. You may need to ask a different question... but don't let it stop you. Keep moving, trying, seeking, and knocking on doors. Knock, and the door will be OPENED.
And who knows, you might get just what you were looking for but were just too afraid to ask!
