We're approaching the most challenging time of year for self-care, so how do you avoid stress, overwhelm, and exhaustion? You can have a holiday season that is balanced, peaceful and full of JOY. I promise it's possible and I want to show you how.
A "Wellness Warrior" is someone fighting the good fight: the fight to feel good. Mind, Body and Spirit... so for me, I am determined to stay present. To stick with my self-care and be intentional with my time. I will do what feels like love and light, and let go of what feels like expectation. I will focus on peace, and joy, and connection. And let the rest go... it's not that I won't be busy... there is a lot to do, and a lot of HAPPY FUN things that I WANT to do! But when it feels like obligation, when it feels like something I just "should" do... that's the kind of thing that doesn't get to stick around this season.
I am offering complimentary "clarity calls" (a $99 value) to the first 10 people who contact me directly to set up a time to chat for 30 - 60 minutes, to get confidence and balance and focus to move forward with what really matters these next few weeks. I want to support you. I want to help you. Because I know the alternative and it's not pretty. I've done the holiday hustle and lost enough to know that it's no fun.
Let's manage it and have a great holiday and hit the ground RUNNING in January 2017!
I'm excited about this week's workshop, where you will have the chance to get in touch with the flow of your creative energy, let the colors go where they want to go, and relax into accepting the imperfection and unpredictability of WATERCOLOR. Sounds deep but really we are going to play and have fun, and make pretty things in the process!
Come and join me this Friday night at the Smithton Community Center at 7:30 p.m. for ART NIGHT!
It has been 13 months since I self-published my first book. I have others in the works, as well as songs and other artistic projects. It's a very creative life I lead these days and I love it.
My husband Dyarl Lewis is also writing. He's completed and is now revising his draft of his NOVEL how cool is that. This Friday night, we are hosting a Writer's Workshop, to talk with YOU, if you have the desire to be a writer, and dive in to what it takes to make that happen!
Doesn't matter if you want to start a blog, write poetry, stories, how-to or self-help books, you know what you want to say. You know the story you want to tell. You have a message to share with the world.
It's time to make progress toward that dream.
Smithton Community Center
For me, a huge part of living life in an open way is being willing to get in touch with my creativity. It can be a little scary. Doubts come up. Judgements come up about not being "good enough". Just like in life, attempting to create by doing things like Art, Music, Writing... they get down to the heart of who we are, and that can be deep stuff.
That all definitely happening when publishing my first book, (the ABC book). And now as I continue to expand, I am doing something ELSE that I have wanted to do for at least a year... (probably more!) I am hosting six WORKSHOPS all centered around creativity!
I want to bring you along on the journey of getting in touch with YOUR creativity.
In these 6 events, the common theme will be self-expression. Going with the flow. Letting whatever happens, happen, without the critical voice in our heads shutting us down and making us quit before we've even begun.
What would you try if you knew you could not fail? I love that quote because it gets to the heart of what so often holds us back. Creativity in art, life, and relationships is scary because there is a fear there that by trying something new, we will branch out too far and fall on our faces. The great thing is, even if you do, guess what? You can try again.
If you are local or if you aren't but you can make it in to town, I would love for you to come to one of the workshops.
I am having 3 Art Nights, (all with special themes) then one on Songwriting, and another on becoming a Writer. The final evening of the series is entitled "V is for Vision" and we will talk about being a creative force in your own life and approaching your experiences and interactions with a lens of creativity.
Go here to get all the details/dates/etc. on these workshops!
I look forward to seeing you there.
With an Open Heart,
This is an Open Conversation with Lisa Carpenter, a Transformational and Nutrition Coach at www.LisaCarpenter.ca and creator of the online course and program entitled "E.A.T."
In this conversation, we talk about how hard it can sometimes be for women especially to navigate the relationship between our emotions, our bodies, and the food choices we make.
Lisa has a refreshing approach that you actually might not expect to hear from a more traditional weight loss or nutrition coach. To me, she makes so much sense and gets to the heart of what really needs to change in order to transform my relationship to food.
I had so many AH-HA's during this conversation with Lisa. I was specifically interested to speak with her because our new group in Smithton and ONLINE in the M.A.S.H. Facebook group is really discovering some interesting things when it comes to goal setting and making changes in our lives.
I'll let you watch the video to get the full scoop. It's 47 minutes long but it's worth watching every second.
You can click to find out more about Lisa @
Her free video series on "No Deprivation Weight Loss" is available on her website. You can also get on the wait list for the next opening of her E.A.T. course, and explore the site for even more nuggets of wisdom from Lisa!
Until next time, Keep Giving, Keep Learning, Stay Open, Stay Brave!
Love and Light,
Founder of The Open Life

You know those nervous flutters in your tummy that you get when you are nervous, or excited about something? Some people call that getting "butterflies"... I realized one day in 2011 or so, that it had been a reeeeaaly long time since I had felt those nervous butterflies in my stomach. This was not a good realization. I was devastated. I was comfortable. Too comfortable.
Sometime in there, I got a glimmer of hope. I started to dream again. I imagined making changes in my life. I imagined that I had an athlete inside this 211 pound body that was waiting to come out and be free. So I did something that gave me butterflies.
I registered for a 5K Run.
It was springtime, and the race was in October. I had put my money down, my family was going to be there, and the thought that I would collapse on the streets of Kansas City was enough of a reason to start trying to run a little bit.
By the time race day came, I had lost 10 pounds. I was at 201 on race day. I barely got any sleep the night before! That was mostly due to my 2 year old. However, I got up, got down to downtown KC with my family and my friend Bipasha was there to support me too. It was a brand new experience and there were definitely butterflies standing there waiting for that gun to go off.
As I crossed the finish line I had tears of joy streaming down my face. My life had changed so much from just this simple decision to register for this race. It was the start of many changes to come. I didn't know that then, but I had set in motion an entirely different future for myself.
In the next 2 years, I was to lose another 40 pounds and completely transform my life. Yes, I've put a few of those pounds back on, but the self-love and acceptance is at an all time high. Running, Weight loss, Fitness, Wellness.... it's all symbolic. These are symbols, opportunities, to step up and love yourself in a new awesome way by taking care of that athlete inside that is just longing to come out!
Maybe you've got fitness in the bag, but there is something else that gives you butterflies right now? The good kind of butterflies that push you forward into the life that's truly possible for you? Talk to that person, Make that art, Send that email, Ask that question. Give that gift. Whatever it is that is making your stomach jump with anticipation... do that. Do THAT thing and see where it takes you. Follow the Butterflies!
We all can remember those questions in school, where a statement is given and you just have to mark, "T" or "F"... True or False? They would be tricky sometimes, where part of it was true but then just one little word wasn't right and it made the sentence false. We had to be aware. We had to pay attention to every word.
I can tell you, that I have really struggled with that voice in my head. I have told myself all kinds of things that aren't true! Here are just some of the things I used to absolutely believe, and have now finally been able to say, "That's just not true!" when these thoughts come up.
"I'm not a runner. I can't run."
"I'm not a salesperson."
"I'm not a writer"
"I can't be a business owner, I can't take that kind of risk."
"I'm not attractive"
"I'm weak, I can't do this."
"I'm all alone."
Do any of these ring a bell? Do any of these seem true to you?
T is for True
In my ABC book, "L is for Love and Light" (find out more by clicking here) T is for True tells us that we get to decide what is true. We get to choose. When we can see that these thoughts coming in and coming at us from all angles are just information, but that we don't have to believe it just because it's there, there is a FREEDOM to DECIDE and all that's left to do is decide which thoughts empower you! Which thoughts and messages resonate with you? What do you WANT for your life? If you get really quiet, and just listen... what feels true?
Here are some of the ways I have CHOSEN to shift my beliefs:
(I now know THESE things to be true:)
FROM "I'm not a runner. I can't run." TO "THERE IS AN ATHLETE INSIDE OF ME THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE AND I AM DOING THE WORK TO BRING HER OUT AND LET HER RUN!"
FROM "I'm not a salesperson." TO "SALES IS SERVICE. SALES IS SHARING. I AM CONFIDENT IN WHAT I HAVE TO SHARE. I ENJOY SERVICE TO OTHERS.
FROM "I'm not a writer" TO "I AM A WRITER"
FROM "I can't be a business owner, I can't take that kind of risk." TO "I AM A BUSINESS OWNER."
FROM "I'm not attractive" TO "I AM ATTRACTIVE"
FROM "I'm weak, I can't do this." TO "I AM STRONG. I AM CAPABLE. I CAN DO ANYTHING."
FROM "I'm all alone." TO "I AM NOT ALONE. I AM SUPPORTED, I BELONG. I AM LOVED."
What is TRUE for you?
Love and Light,
I just want to say, that this past few years has been quite a journey for me. I left my marriage, moved to my hometown, changed careers completely, and got back in touch with my creative side. But it's really been a journey of SELF-AWARENESS. I'll be honest. I spent the first part of my life SCARED to death most of the time... Scared to fail. Scared to succeed. Scared to stick my neck out there. I wanted to be creative, I wanted freedom, and I longed to live a more authentic life.... But I didn't know how. The fear of not being accepted, the fear of change, these fears actually stood in the way of real connection for me. As I became more aware of these concepts at work in my life, I grew in self-awareness. I could pick out places in my life where I was letting FEAR stop me. I could pick out and notice when I felt trapped, or in-authentic. And I started to change my life. Oh boy you guys it was hard. It's still hard sometimes! Believe me.
But what I've learned, is this:
It takes COURAGE to pursue a life of Creativity and Freedom.
It takes AWARENESS to live Authentically.
It takes an OPEN HEART to experience real Connection.
This is the conversation I love to have. The OPEN conversation about what's REALLY GOING ON on the inside... When we start talking openly it can be hard. I know! I have had my fair share of HARD CONVERSATIONS. However...
I believe this is just the type of "hard conversation" that you need to be diving in to
if you want real change in your life.
You know actually, for me, it's exciting when things get REAL... It's challenging for sure, but the only way to grow. There's such FREEDOM on the other side of getting real.
That's what I'm here for at The Open Life.
I want you to know that your journey matters, and that change is not something to be scared of. Living life with an open heart, an open mind, and open acceptance of yourself and others... it leads to beautiful new things you can't even imagine right now.
There is a greater truth in YOUR LIFE. There is MORE to life than your current stress, sadness, or problems. There is Freedom, and Creativity, and Abundance of every kind!
And at the heart of everything? I believe the truth is this: You are Enough. I'll say it again:
You are Enough.
You are enough, just as you are. You have what it takes to live the life you want, and you have so much love and light to share with this world. I know this is true because it is true for me. I didn't think I had anything to give. I felt like everything I touched seemed to fail. I felt it best to just hide out, and try not to mess anything else up. When I started to believe it might be true, that I am enough, I am perfectly imperfect and meant for something bigger, then I was ready. I was ready to push through my fear, have the hard conversations, make the changes to live more authentically.
If you are ready to have the hard conversations, and really get connected to deeper and greater truth in your life, sign up for weekly email updates* from me, and let's dive in.
I'll notify you when I post a new video, and keep you in the loop with new projects and books and stuff like that. Meanwhile, explore this site, check out the blog articles, look at sample pages from my ABC book, and always remember:
"Keep giving, keep learning, stay open, stay brave"
